Our historic courtyard has a rich history.
In 1822, the building was rebuilt according to the project of arch. M. A. Ovsyannikov for the new owner - Colonel F. N. Petrovo-Solovovo. Then it acquired its current appearance - a six-column portico appeared. In 1823, it was Ovsyannikov who built the yard outbuildings. In 1823-1825. architect M.A. Ovsyannikov built courtyard outbuildings.
In the 1840s the house belonged to Kalugin, later - to the lieutenant and rich farmer D.E. Benardaki. An arbor-stage was built in the garden, a metal terrace was attached to the mansion from the yard (1868-1869, architect A.K. Kolman). L. N. Tolstoy, F. M. Dostoevsky, M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin and N. A. Nekrasov performed in the club at literary evenings. By 1882. In 1881-1885. exhibitions of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions were held here with the participation of I. E. Repin, I. N. Kramskoy, V. I. Surikov, V. E. Makovsky. From 1893 to 1898 there was a Chess Society, which was founded by Senator P. A. Saburov, publisher M. A. Suvorin and chess player M. I. Chigorin. In 1896, the first international tournament in Russia was held with the participation of E. Lasker. Later, the Electrotheatre (Pate) cinema was opened here, and in 1907, a panopticon museum of wax figures.
After the revolution, the private theater-entreprise "Queen of Spades" worked in the house. Since 1924 the building has become the center of the theatrical life of the city. It housed the Central House of Artists (since 1939 - named after K. S. Stanislavsky) with a branch of the All-Russian Theater Society, now - the House of Actors. K. S. Stanislavsky and the city organization of the Union of Theater Workers of Russia.
